Jon Laukvik wurde in Oslo geboren und erhielt seine Ausbildung (Kirchenmusik, Orgel und Klavier) zunächst in seiner Heimatstadt. Später setzte er das Orgelstudium an der Musikhochschule Köln bei Michael Schneider und in Paris bei Marie-Claire Alain fort. Cembalostudien absolvierte er bei Hugo Ruf an der Kölner Musikhochschule.

1977 erhielt er den 1. und den Bach-Preis im Orgelwettbewerb der "Internationalen Orgelwoche Nürnberg"; im selben Jahr wurde er Preisträger des internationalen Orgelwettbewerbs in Verbindung mit dem Deutschen Evangelischen Kirchentag in Berlin.

Von 1980 bis 2016 war Jon Laukvik Professor an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart. Von 2001 bis 2017 unterrichtete er an der Staatlichen Musikhochschule (Norges musikkhøgskole) in Oslo. Er war zudem Gastprofessor an der Royal Academy of Music in London und am Institute of Sacred Music / Yale University (New Haven).

Seine Konzerttätigkeit als Organist und Cembalist führte ihn in europäische Länder, nach Israel, Japan, Kanada, Korea und in die USA. Er ist Juror internationaler Orgelwettbewerbe (z.B. ARD-Wettbewerb München, St Albans, Chartres, Dallas, Dublin, Kaliningrad, Montreal, Nürnberg, Odense) und hält Kurse und Seminare in West- und Ost-Europa sowie in Asien.

The Royal College of Organists, London, hat ihm 2021 die RCO Medal verliehen in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste als Organist, Komponist und Pädagoge.

Er ist Verfasser einer Orgelschule zur historischen Aufführungspraxis (Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing) in drei Teilen (Carus-Verlag, Stuttgart); Teil I: Barock und Klassik (englische Fassung: The Baroque and Classical Periods); Teil II: Romantik (englische Fassung: The Romantic Period); Teil III: Die Moderne (als Herausgeber) (englische Fassung: Modern and Contemporary Music).

Darüber hinaus ist er Herausgeber u.a. der Orgelkonzerte Op. 7 von Georg Friedrich Händel (Carus-Verlag; in Zusammenarbeit mit Werner Jacob). Eine in Zusammenarbeit mit David Sanger edierte Gesamtausgabe der Orgelwerke Louis Viernes in 13 Bänden ist im Februar 2008, ebenfalls im Carus-Verlag, erschienen.

Jon Laukvik komponiert hauptsächlich Stücke für Orgel solo und für Orgel mit Gesang bzw. mit Instrumenten (Streicher, Klavier, Schlagzeug, Trompete, Posaune, Cello, Horn).

Jon Laukvik is internationally known as a teacher, performer, juror, author, and composer.

Jon Laukvik was born in Oslo, where he received his early education in piano, organ, and church music. Later at the Cologne Musikhochschule he studied organ with Michael Schneider and harpsichord with Hugo Ruf – and in Paris privately with Marie-Claire Alain.

In 1977 he was awarded the First Price and the Bach Prize in the organ competition at the Nuremberg International Organ Week. In same year he was a prize winner of the International Organ Competition in conjunction with the German Protestant Church Assembly in Berlin.

In 2021 he was awarded the Medal of the Royal College of Organists (London) for his achievements as an organist, pedagogue, and composer.

He was professor of organ and harpsichord at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart from 1980 till 2016, visiting professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music (Norges musikkhøgskole) in Oslo (2001 – 2017), at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and at Yale University (2019-2020).

As a concert organist and cembalist, Jon Laukvik has appeared throughout Europe and in Canada, Israel, Japan, Korea, and the U.S.

He has served as a juror for international organ competitions, for instance in Alkmaar, Brno, Chartres, Dallas, Dublin, Groningen, Kaliningrad, Munich (ARD), Nuremberg (ION), Montreal, Odense, Prague (Prague Spring), and St Albans. He has taught courses and seminars in both Eastern and Western Europe and also in Asia.

He has authored two books on “Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing,” published by Carus-Verlag, Stuttgart. They have quickly become standard texts in music education in Europe and the U.S. Volume 1, "The Baroque and Classical Periods", covers the interpretation of works from the 16th to 18th centuries, . Volume 2, "The Romantic Period", covers the organ and organ interpretation of the Romantic repertoire. He is the editor of a third volume in this series, "Modern and Contemporary Music", with articles by several authors like Guy Bovet, Kevin Bowyer, Anders Ekenberg, Hans-Ola Ericsson, Hans Fagius, Jeremy Filsell, Bernhard Haas, and Armin Schoof.

He has also edited the Handel Organ Concerti Op. 7 for Carus-Verlag (together with Werner Jacob). A complete edition of the organ works of Louis Vierne in 13 volumes (edited together with David Sanger) was published by Carus-Verlag in March 2008.

Jon Laukvik’s compositions include works for solo organ, organ with other instruments (i.e. piano, percussion, trumpet, trombone, cello, horn) as well as vocal and instrumental works. His recent compositions are published by Edition Svitzer, Copenhagen.

Jon Laukvik est né à Oslo, Norvège. Il fait tout d’abord ses études musicales dans sa ville natale avant de les poursuivre à Cologne avec Michaël Schneider, puis à Paris avec Marie-Claire Alain. Il étudie également le clavecin à Cologne avec Hugo Ruf.

En 1977, il obtint le Premier Prix et le Prix Bach au concours international d’orgue de Nuremberg (ION).

Le Royal College of Organists de Londres lui a décerné la Médaille RCO en 2021 en reconnaissance de ses services en tant qu'organiste, compositeur et pédagogue.

En 1980, il est nommé professeur d’orgue au Conservatoire Supérieur de Stuttgart auquel s’ajoutera en 1991 celui des instruments historiques. Il a pris sa retraite en 2016. Il était en plus professeur d’orgue à l’Académie de Musique (Norges Musikkhøgskole) à Oslo (2001-2017). Il a enseigné comme Visiting Professor à la Royal Academy of Music, Londres, et à l’Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University, USA.

Il donne des concerts en Europe, au Japon, Canada, Corée ainsi qu’en Israël et aux USA.

Membres des Jurys des concours internationaux (Bordeaux, Chartres, Dallas, Dublin, Montréal, Munich, Nuremberg, Odense etc.), il donne des Master-Classes à travers l’Europe. Il a réalisé de nombreux enregistrements pour la radio.

Auteur des ouvrages sur la pratique de l’orgue en trois volumes ("Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing"), éditeur des concertos pour orgue et orchestre op. 7 de Haendel (avec Werner Jacob) et les œuvres complètes pour orgue de Louis Vierne (avec David Sanger), publiés par Carus-Verlag, Stuttgart, il a composé plusieurs pièces pour orgue seul ou avec d’autres instruments, et pour ensembles vocaux et instrumentaux.
